ANKLE FRACTURE (STABLE)

ANATOMY

There are three bones of the ankle joint, the tibia, fibular and the talus.  The tibia and the fibular comprise of specific parts of the ankle; the medial malleolus, posterior malleolus and the lateral malleolus.  The ankle joint and the joint between the tibia and the fibular are the joints involved in an ankle fracture.

MECHANISM OF INJURY

A fractured ankle can range from a simple break in one bone (stable fracture), which may not stop you from walking to several fractures (unstable fracture).  That can require no weight bearing for several months.  A twisting, rotating, roll, tripping or an impact from a car accident are typical ways of fracturing the ankle.

SYMPTOMS

-Immediate and severe pain.

-Inability to put weight on the foot

-Bruising.

-Swelling.

-Tender to touch.

-Deformity, especially if the ankle joint is dislocated.

TREATMENT

Please consult with your medical professional for a complete diagnosis and treatment plan.
