OSTEOARTHRITIS OF THE KNEE

ANATOMY

The cartilage of the knee wears away over time which causes the edges of the bones to rub together causing the joint to feel stiff and sore.  A compaction occurs on either the medial, lateral, or both compartments of the knee.  Bone “spurs” develop which increase pain with weight bearing and ambulation.

MECHANISM OF INJURY

A variety of reasons may cause OA such as a previous knee injury, repetitive strain on the knee,
fractures, ligament tear, and meniscal injury which can affect alignment and promote wear and tear.  Also, genetics which make some people more likely to develop knee osteoarthritis, obesity
and problems with subchondral bone (the bone layer underneath cartilage).

SYMPTOMS

-Patient will complain of pain, stiffness and swelling of the knee.

TREATMENT

Please consult with your medical professional for a complete diagnosis and treatment plan.

OA Knee picture
The Swede-O OA Knee Brace is designed specifically for patients with unicompartmental osteoarthritis (OA). It is the first OA knee brace that provides the necessary unloading of the patient's knee for pain relief and corrects gait abnormalities associated with OA. This new approach in osteoarthritis knee treatment helps relieve continuing pain associated with the deterioration of the knee joint and delays the progression of OA. This adjustable dynamic brace helps rehabilitate the knee by strengthening the patient's quadricep muscles. Clinicians will see visible improvements in gait, leg strength, foot placement and overall physical capabilities.
